💔🤖 No, You Can’t Marry Your Chatbot… At Least Not in Ohio! An Ohio lawmaker is making it official: AI companions are nonsentient and cannot gain legal personhood. Love in the 21st century is getting… complicated. An Ohio lawmaker is making sure that when it comes to AI, love stops at the chatbot 💔.
Rep. Thaddeus Claggett, chair of the state House Technology and Innovation Committee, introduced House Bill 469 last month. If passed, the bill would ban AI systems from gaining legal personhood and make it illegal to marry them.
Why? Well, apparently some people are already getting feelings for their digital companions 🤯. A study by Florida-based marketing company Fractl found that:
22% of respondents said they’ve formed an emotional connection with a chatbot ❤️
3% even considered a chatbot a romantic partner 💌
Claggett says the law is meant to protect the integrity of marriage and ensure that only humans can be considered legal partners.
Whether you think this is common sense or just another glimpse into the weird future of AI romance, it’s clear: robots may be clever… but in Ohio, they’re not getting a wedding invitation anytime soon 💍🤖.
