🍿🎬 How often are people actually going to the movies these days? A new survey found only about 53% of Americans went to a movie theater last year, with younger adults far more likely to hit the big screen than older generations. Here’s what the numbers say about the current state of moviegoing.

With awards season heating up — including the upcoming Academy Awards — it raises a simple question: how many of the nominated movies did you actually see in theaters?

For a lot of people, the answer might be none.

A survey conducted last summer found that only about 53% of Americans went to a movie theater in the past year. That means nearly half the country skipped the big screen altogether. 📽️

👶 Young Adults Still Love the Theater

Age appears to play a big role in who’s still going to the movies.

According to the survey:

  • 67% of adults ages 18 to 29 said they went to a theater in the past year

  • Only 39% of adults 65 and older said the same

So younger audiences are still showing up for the popcorn, giant screen, and surround sound experience. 🍿

Meanwhile, older viewers may be more comfortable watching from the couch.

📉 The Box Office Is Still Recovering

Movie theaters are still working their way back after a tough stretch that started around 2020.

Last year, domestic ticket sales topped $9 billion.

That’s a solid number, but it’s still lower than the $14 to $16 billion theaters were regularly bringing in during the 2000s and 2010s.

Streaming services and changing viewing habits have definitely shifted the industry. 📺

💰 Tickets Cost a Lot More Now

Another factor? Ticket prices have climbed quite a bit.

The average movie ticket today costs about $16.

Back in 2010, the average price was just $7.89.

So while people are still going to the movies, it’s definitely not the same bargain it used to be.

🎥 The Big Screen Still Has Its Fans

Even with streaming options everywhere, millions of people still enjoy the classic movie theater experience — the big screen, the booming sound, and yes… the overpriced popcorn. 😄🍿

The real question now is:

Are you someone who still goes to the theater… or do you wait until it hits streaming?
